My wife and I were members of Marble Collegiate Church in NYC for a couple of years (1979-1982 ish) while I pursued music opportunities. Norman Vincent Peale preached almost every week. After the service they duplicated the sermon on a big cassette tape duplicator and most weeks we would purchase a copy after socializing at the coffee break. On weeks that we missed a service my wife would record to an inexpensive cassette recorder when the service was broadcast on the radio on Sunday evening. As we were going through boxes preparing to have the option to downsize we came across 20 or 30 Peale sermon tapes. We listened to several and were reminded of how inspirational these messages were. Dr. Peale's sermons have unique, true story anecdotes, humorous content and a masterful delivery style that is riveting. His sermons attracted full house crowds every Sunday for decades to Marble Church in New York City- not the location you would expect to see long lines waiting for a seat in a church pew. The lines were on Fifth Avenue every Sunday without fail. However the tapes are in dire shape. They originally were recorded on the lowest quality tapes and if you know anything about tapes they break down over the years. I did some research and can not find most of these sermons on the internet. One or two are available on Guideposts and the Marble Church website. A few others have been excerpted and shorter segments (7 minutes approximately) have been posted to the internet but those short segments don't show the full context of the sermon as delivered. At this point I have made a vow that these important works should not be lost to the world. I do not know if others have tried to restore this content from cassette tapes but I am carefully working (for free) to transfer, clean up (noise gating, splicing broken tapes, etc) and publish these works. At some point I will write a technical audio description of all the different techniques I have to employ to save these tapes. There are a couple of tapes that are so old/broken that I fear they are not fixable. For these there is one last ditch experiment to try which is to bake them in the oven and then there is a one shot window to transfer while still warm.
